    sound card choice?

    hey,
i'm pretty new here, first post, but have been reading for the past few months and trying to design my carputer system. i want to set up a 5.1 surround sound in the car and have come to the conclusion i want to use the alpine pxa-h700 to control/process the sound but the next thing i need is a good sound card that has an optical out. so my question is what are some good soundcards, internal or external (also which would be better), to run with optical audio out?
while i'm posting i'll also have a few more questions. first being will whichever frontend i decide to use (have most of them downloaded and kep playing with them to decide what i want) support 5.1 sound output from things like dvds or avi files that are encoded in 5.1? also on that note anyone have any suggestions on programs to use to rip my current dvds onto my computer with the dolby digital 5.1 sound?
    thanks for the help

look into the M-Audio stuff. I am using the same processor and am using the Sound Blaster PCMCIA notebook card that has optical in/out. It's requirements say that it's for P4 1.2GHz or faster......I can't say for sure how well it works with the MII120000 mobo as I am waiting on a replacement M1-ATX as my powersupply.

Check out my page to give you some ideas if you need them!

Glad to see someone else out there who is involved in the audio system part of this stuff as well!

i'm an audio guy at heart and just kinda stumbled on this website and thought it would be awsome to just have all my music at the touch of my finger and then get the added benefits of movies, gps and so on. it would be nice not to have a bunch of cds (not really too many cause my current head plays mp3 cds) and i like that processor because it has 2 front outs so i can do some custom components and the subwoofer control (because i'm spoiled with that on my current head). also doing this cause my screen on my rockford is starting to dye but the rest of it still works so it can still be used just cant see what i'm doing (tried cleaning contacts on back since its detachable and opened it up and reheated some joints with no luck). but i think i'll defently have more fun with this stuff.
