Swapping platters in identical drives is not something the average user should even attempt. You risk damaging the platters and heads even more. If you can get an identical drive, swap the controller card instead. No need to open up the drive at all to do this. Some of the later drives I've worked on use pressure contacts to interface with the chassis. No tiny connectors to mess with. If the controller isn't the problem then there's really no way to get the data back unless you're willing to spend some really serious money with a data recovery company.

I have done this a few times on a customers HDD. It does work sometimes, worth a try out of desperation.

If you do really need your stuff then dont try this, go and get it recovered properly. Just incase you smash your HDD into bits

Fudge it, keep your hdd in a safe place, and wait about 10 years. this fudging problem will be solved in the meantime. fudge sounds really good right about now.

    2) Put it in the freezer for about 30 minutes.

Not even joking, this will get your platters spinning again.
You might wanna back up your data ASAP as it probably wont last long after this.
