Anyone use this USB hub? Question on "non-powered"

I am tring to find the perfect hubs for my setup and in my search I found this: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduc...factory=BROWSE

Has anyone used it, or one like it? The part that is throwing me is the "non - powered" part. If you look at the pics it has what appears to be an additional USB/power cable.. looks like you have the option of useing one of the USB ports to provide extra power, or you could something else into the end that plugs into the hub, but i am not sure what..

I found the spec sheet on the manufactures website and it says that the 7 ports all provide 500 milliamp. How is this possible if it is only powered by 2 usb that would be only 1 amp. right?

    That's not a 2v inlet that's a 5v at 2amps inlet.

Yeah, that makes sense. If the max amperage per port is 500milliamps then multiply that times the 4 ports and you get 2 amps. I don't think all devices use the full 500milliamps though.

Oh, hehe, didn't notice the 3 on the back. Ummmm, I guess you can't run full load on every single port then *shrugs* I don't think that many devices do anyway.

This port is perfect for what I am looking for having the 7 ports, and the way they are configured. by having the ones in the back and front I can mold it in the dash and have installed components plug into the back where they are out of sight and have the front ports availible in the cablin of the car.

It will be pretty loaded up, touchscreen, obdII, mic, wireless g, bluetooth, possibly a keyoard and/or mouse at times. I dont mind running 5v up to it, as I planned on doing this for my slim slot dvd.

@peoples what is the other side of the hub end of the usb power cord for? Is there a optional plugin cord?

You could buy a right barrell connector from Radioshack and solder on the 5 volt and ground wires from the PSU pretty easily. Then you wouldn't have to worry about it losing power under a load running on only the USB bus power.
