    new car PC?

    http://www1.us.dell.com/content/prod...s=&l=en&s=dfh&

Starts around $524: P4-2800, XP Pro, 40gB HDD, 256Mb memory, 24X cd drive. And it's small - not as small as mini-ITX but pretty darn good for an off the shelf PC.

Downsides - apparently has big external power brick with a custom power connector on the back of the PC. No built-in multi-channel sound. No PCI extendibility.

Upsides - 7 usb sockets. Powerful PCI express video - almost certainly also able to output 800x480 using powerstrip I would guess.

Possible upsides - the media bay is the same as a laptop. Could you plug a laptop media bay battery extender into it to power the PC...? Hmm.

This would fit under my passenger seat better than the custom m-ATX m/b & case I'm working on, and it would be significant more powerful and much less work .

That power connector may not be a downside... does it take in 12V only, or does it need multiple voltages (12V, 5V, 3.3V, -12V)?

If it only needs 12V, then just get a regulator, and you're done.

If it needs all voltages, then you can hook up an opus or equivalent to it.

Looks pretty good overall I must say.

It has 6 or 8 pins so I imagine it's most, if not all, of the ATX voltages. The supposed size of the power brick also seems to imply it's doing more than just producing 12V. Still, even with an invertor it might be a winner.

If it will accept a battery in place of the CD drive, it would be ideal - instance crank survival...

Why don't you spec it out then. Remember - it has to be a P4-2800 or better, and it has to be equivalently sized.

Not everyone wants PCI - I have no need for it in my setup - it'll be pure USB for all the additional pieces.

    Wow.

You probably ought to consider getting your blood pressure tested regularly. Just a thought.

If you have maintained a large network, you will realize that they don't "suck balls". In fact, from a network management perspective they are great. Then again, "**** DELL THEY SUCK BALLS DONT BUY ANYTHING THEY SELL!" is a convincing argument against.....

The ability to manage, get timely responses and get things fixed quickly(although, I have had no problems, except a broken mouse) leads me to continue to purchase their products.

I would not, however, think that a clone couldn't coudn't do a good job. But getting "Bob, the computer guy" to come fix our computers is a pain in the ***. So I buy Dell. Yes, I can tear down a comuter and fix it, but I don't want to. I would rather depend on something that works for what I need it.

If you can build me a computer that won't fail, or if it does fail, come out and fix it the next day, no questions asked, and keep track of everything I buy, and get me burnt in, working, computers in 2-5 days... well, I say, give me a quote. Until then, I will use them.

If you mean they aren't the right computer for someone who takes the computer apart on regular basis, changes boards out, runs a computer in their car, or leaves the case off, because it is too time consuming to open it up everytime, then yes, you are close, Dell probably isn't for you.

But, that is just my opinion, not to be confused with fact.
