I hear you, I'm the same way a few less inches in my truck compared to the money they want for the 2.5 HDs its not worth it.
I can't find a deal on laptop hdd's. It's impossible! Desktop hdds, it seems they are just giving away! And since I'm replacing my Opus 90w with a Opus 150w, I won't have any power problems. The money I save on the hdd will go into the new Opus plus another toy, and I probably got triple the space. As for the stress the hdd can handle... we'll soon see about that. But for now it's not worth stressing over.

You might regret saying that. So you buy a 50.00 HDD, and 2 months down the road it dies or has sevre corruption, now you have to go out and buy another HDD.. This time you might consider a laptop drive but instead of buying one for 100 you actually paid 150 because dont forget about the original drive...Originally Posted by Bailey
These things arent made for the abuse your going to give it and the chances of failure are in turn higher... Spend the extra 50 and get a laptop HDD or think about putting your OS on a Solid State media drive.
I've learned the hard way when it comes to spending money on important components dont be cheap because in the end it will wind up costing you more...

I run 2 3.5 inch drives.. one 7200 rpm the other 5200 .. 7200 for a boot drive.. and the 5200 shuts off when not in use.. so it works out well..
plus IDEs are way cheap to replace if you *cough* fry one ..

I disagree
I have a 3.5 HDD I have run it thru some severe cold temps bumps and regular driving now and not a beep out of it. I would rather spend 100 on 200 gig the 150 for and 80 gig.you could have 2 80 gigs for the price of a 2.5 80 gig.
But thats just my opinon
My 3.5 has been running for almost a year now without any issues. I drive down a dirt road that is about a mile and a half long as a shortcut to the interstate here. The dirt road is full of potholes and has a washboard surface the whole way and it has never bothered my drive a bit. I'll take my chances with the 3.5 for the $$$.

4 years with a 20 gig 3.5 maxtor with not one problem. And i live in NJ so i see all types of weather
I have no issues with 3.5" drives. Mount it right and you won't have a problem. I had a 15 gig maxtor originally back in 2000, it died cuz the stupid car's t-tops leaked some water on it. If it didn't get wet, it'd probably still work today. I replaced it with a 40 gig and used that for 2 years without issues. I wrote off my car with the hard drive in it. The system was still running after the impact and the drive is now in my file server. The new/same car has a 200 gig drive in it for about a year and no problem so far. Both cars were MR2 turbo's that have been lowered on Eibach sportlines, super stiff and unforgiving. Hard drives have no problems with bumps, I only had one drive die on me and it's cuz it got wet, not cuz of bumps, not cuz of the -10 degree vancouver winters or 40+ degree Vegas summers.
3 years and 8 month and 130,000 miles in a 4x4 and never had any problems with the 3.5 20g drive
