Typical eh! I didn't expect any less..

Expect the market DICE/Drivesoft are venturing into to be ripped from beneath them - Sony and the big players will sell versions that'll do what consumers want as soon as there is a market.

Message to us lot? We've gotta step up our game... A LOT - We need our Car PC's to beat the *** off the 'commercial versions' as they're catching up quickly!

One thing that we have an advantage over a commecially available solution is
that we chose the software and the material we can play. So we still will keep on rolling our own. Of course, the commercially made ones will appeal to those who want simplicity and don't mind paying for it.
Iwill ZPCgx 2.4ghz cel, 256mb pc2700, external combo drive, 80gb 2.5 laptop drive, xp pro, usb gps, 7 in Lilliput TS , carnetix CNX1900. All mounted ghetto- still experimenting and tweaking.

Yeah, I'm kinda thinking they will bring out unit's that have a 'front end' like on the link above... but obviously use XP underneath. So in theory, you'd be able to buy one of those, and say install Road Runner or Centrafuse instead. If that were the case we'd end up just being a support forum for, say 'Sony Car PC modders' eventually where we all mod sony or kenwood XP car pcs... EUUGH!

I'm surprised there are no pictures of VIA car PCs yet... VIA themselves said to me a month or two ago they had wanted to line up a few Car PCs for CeBit

Exactly. In addition, Frodo and Guino listen to their end users' requests for changes and features, incorporating those that they can.

And this is why with ALL the talented software developers that are active on this site, and the many that lurk, they should all band together and develop on a single project. To me, it is utterly stupid to have so many "frontends" as we have here and not try to combine resources to produce something that not only will appeal to the community, but to also the big players of the car industry.

On a side note.... with talent shown in a public forum, the researchers of larger companies would be stupid not to recruit the people that not only develop the software here, but also act as a team player.

I am sure frodo and many others would jump on an offer by sony, pioneer, etc etc if offered.

I have to disagree. Its good to have diversitry. Cause if every developer got together, they woyuld only satisfy at most, 50% of the mp3 community. The other half would be unhappy with the product. With the way it is now, we have choices. I choose frodo. Others choose RR, still others choose Medicar or Mediaengine.

And if Frodo or anyon was approached by Sony, they would basically be giving up any creative input. The suits would tell them what to put in it, what not to, etc. There would be no, "user requests"

IMO, I think if one of the delvelopers here got approched by sony or something simular it would be diserved. The software was developed on there time and they were doing what they enjoyed doing. We got to enjoy it along the way, and there will always be software availible to us for design and improvment, RR is open source, and there are always going to be new people who want to try there hands at building a front end.

when the computer industry itself was in its infancy it was the "early softaware pioneers" who were busy designing a basic program for there altairs that got offers from the large companies such as IBM. And they (for good or bad) have largely shaped the software we use today.
