USB Issues

Ok, Had Carcomputer installed for a week, here are the problems I tend to be having. When first powering up does not find my USB devices (gyro mouse keyboard/AUdigy 2 NX/GPS). The power is fed from my 12/5v rails from computer. I know devices are getting the power because the touchscreen works. It seems after unplugging the USB cable and plugging back in everything works. (This is not acceptable). Also there are times the computer just reboots itself.

Anyone else have similar issues? If so did you find a resolution?

Need more info to diagnose. What is the power supply, startup/shutdown controller, motherboard and peripherals you are using?

Random reboots are often related to either heat issues (where is your computer and what is it enclosed in?) or voltage issues. ITPS can often disappoint, for example.

Do you have a USB hub in the mix? Is it powered or unpowered? Are all of the USB devices plugged in to the same port/hub? You mentioned that the touchscreen works. Is that plugged into the same place as the non-working devices?

I've experienced difficulty with my setup if I remove it from the car, then reinstall it and plug the hub into a different port. Everything must be reinstalled, including the keyboard and touchscreen....which you can't do if the keyboard and touchscreen aren't working!

Also, are you hibernating each time your shutdown or doing a full shutdown? There are cases of USB devices not working properly after awakening from hibernation.

I am thinking its a voltage issue, however the computer is like the xenarc computer s620 (pentium4 2.8ghz). The usb is powered throught the 5 volts, and actually all 3 ports on the hub dont work until you unplug the one that goes to the hub. You unplug and start the computer from a cold boot, than plug in, its fine. When the computer was running in the house, I did not have problems but also did not have everything plugged in (so guessing it may be the power issue).

No controller or specific PS, waiting for the dual 150 from carnetix that will be out next month. Hopefully that will take care of my problems.

Is the computer connected directly to the battery?

Try operating the system WITHOUT the hub in the mix. Just plug one of the USB devices in and do a shut down and restart or hiberate/wake and see if the devices are still working. If so, it's your hub that's causing the problem.

I will give that a shot and see if that does anything for me, but I have 3 ports on my pc all3 have something plugged in, and the one with the usb hub has 3 devices plugged into it. So I dont think its gonna be a hub issue when it happens to all 3 ports, but will have to see if it remembers the other usb devices when the hub is not plugged into it.

Give it a try. The way you described it in your earlier thread, the issue was with all three devices that were plugged into the hub.

Well bug, what I did do was remove the 5v power supply going to the usb hub, my devices still power on just fine. I will have to see what happens tomorrow morning when I power up, the inverter has its own power down switch after 5 minutes of no power (remote). So far everything has been fine from removing the power supply from hub.

I will do a follow up tomorrow, and let the verdict be know.

Ok, think I have my problems ironed out. I am overloading my PSU (150watt) with a p4 2.8 ghz, 3.5 ide hard drive, dvd (laptop) than 12v xenarc, 12 volt for XMdirect, 5v to usb hub (disconnected and still working with out power supply), 5v to audigy 2nx, and I am powering usb GPS, USB Orinco wireless card, and last but not least the Gyration USB keyboard and mouse.

So it looks like I definately need the new carnetix power supply when it comes out.

The unit worked fine when it was on my bench for testing purposes.
