I've done a rough of the idea i have.
The hard drive will be suspended in a cage between eight long throw R/C spring/damper assemblies set on their softest setting, they will be compressed to half their travel so that the Drive has full movement in all directions, this should be in theory easy to build and highly effective, if someone has a better idea, I am open to suggestions/riddicule.

Actually, if you mount the springs at a 45° it would dappen in all directions. Thats why if you look at the rear of a truck you will ususally see them at somewhat of an angle.

OK, so how about this strategy. Since quite a few have claimed no problems with many miles, then I will simply bolt the sucker to the floor, and worry about it when/if the sucker goes bad. With harddrive space so cheap these days, surely everyone has backed up everything that matters on these car hard drives anyway right??
Just a little reading on this topic will find my experiance in this realm.... more than one car wreck with a 3.5" drive playing music.... Just fine... the drive is so much more durable than the driver it will not matter. Suspension of the drive may cause more trouble and will certainly be more time to install.Originally Posted by mrshelf

Yes, you should search... and Yes, It has been covered before!
Read the FAQ!
hell, why not just put a wireless network card in your car and upload all your files to your house every once in a while? I think it would take care of any data loss worries... and if your hard drive goes out quickly, send it in on warranty (tee-hee) and then mount the new on in a new way... if it wears out again, get your $$ back and buy a different brand![]()
Before I puke from reading another hdd shock thread, I'd like to say that in the 5 +/- years I've been here, I've never heard of anyone loosing a drive to shock. The things are built so cheaply these days, you'll be lucky to get 6mos out of them reguardless of the conditions they're placed in!!!!![]()
Off rant, does anyone have one of these thingamajigs - http://www.cockpit-solutions.com/
Better yet, thinking back to an old highschool experiment, I think one could rig up a G-Meter from a weight, a spring, and a ruler...
It would be interesting to see how many G's the average pothole puts on the frame of your car!
S11D336B - less bull**** and more data. Your theories sound fine. You've articulated the problem eloquently but you have NO DATA to prove or disprove them.
How about some vibration and shock tests for different drive positions and shock absorbing techniques on a calibrated vibration table, configured identically, running the same software, performing the same access routines? Until then, it's all anecdotal evidence.
Here's my anecdote: 3.5" Fujitsu BOLTED to a piece of wood that's screwed to my rear shelf. 8 months, no failures. So there.
