    too stupid to try?

Well, being that i really don't need this old 500 mhz laptop anymore....(being as i am selling it).........if it doesnt sell within the week I plan on trying to hook it up straight to the cars AC line. I will put a small inline fuse so the thing cant get more then 5 amps or so. The reason I am even concidering this is that the power adapter i use for it says it outputs 10-16v, and 2.2-3.2 amps. Will this thing definatly explode? cause if so, i might think twice.....of course if i do attempt it......i will take a few precassions......wire it up to a fused distrobution block and not have the thing sitting in my car while its on.....and use pretty heavy grade wire.....i'm thinking 8guage as i still have some laying around.

oh, one more thing, i promise not to attempt this before the end of the week (and if someone buys it first, im not gonna do this)

    Any thoughts?

The reason I am even concidering this is that the power adapter i use for it says it outputs 10-16v
what does the bottom of the laptop say - its not amps, its volts
you need to worry about - it will only draw the amps it needs

AMPs is like a volume of water
Volts is like water pressure or how fast the water flow is

Most laptops use 16v to 20v now days with most 18v-19v
I have a old 486 laptop that will run from 12v with no power
    adapter at all

Actually, your alternator outputs AC (alternating current), it's just retified (made into DC by use of diodes) before your battery.

I'd say your hit or miss there. My general opinion is that voltage in the car is not clean enough to power the laptop without causing freezing and potentialy damaging it. There is a reason that most ac/dc converters for laptops are expensive, they do quite a bit of filtering.
