    Operating system not found... help!!

Well, sometimes i leave my laptop on all night and the other morning i woke up and it had some error on it so i didn't read it and just turned it off. When i went to turn it back on i couldn't get it to work... It would start to load (screen with press F2 for ...) then it would come to a black screen with white writting that said 'Operating system not found' I kept trying and trying and it would just go to that screen. I finally decided to press F2 to check into it and it said under the title hard drive 'none' So i thought maybe i have a crash. well eventually i exited that screen and it just booted up for me. I turned it off, went to bed, turn it back on and it said the same thing 'operating system not found' i played with it again and finally got it to load. Is my hard drive about to crash?? Is it a virus or something?(i did a virus scan and got nothing) Should i buy another hard drive? should i start saving all my important stuff to cd's? Any suggestions and comments are welcomed.... thanks.

Harddrive may be on the way out. Purchase new one and ghost contents over to it.

or it could be just the drive getting to hot and playing up for a while.

I've had that with my work Dell laptop when I've forgotten to turn it off. the drive overheats and then won't play ball until it's left to call down for a while.

it might be your mbr is currupt
try booting off of your xp cd and going into the recovery console

    type the following commands
    fixmbr c:
    fixboot c:
    bootcfg /rebuild

warning i've read that following the directions above had screwed up a few people's mbrs, i've never had this problem however.

you should loose anything, people have said that its destroyed their master boot record, but.....if people are using fixmbr.....usually its because there is something wrong with their mbr in the first place

eiither youve lost it, or you havent. Fix Mbr is not going to corrupt anything you could still pull out of there. It's worth a try, already.
