    usb-ide help please

trying to power a now-external-internal dvd rom/dvdrw whatever i get to buy

looking for easiest solution... i figure i have to give external power and am running a molex to the front... the molex will split (5v to a usb port and 12v back to a molex connector and to the dvd rom)... the two grounds will go to each respective device...

since i have a usb port up front, i was going to plug the ide to usb into that...

do i need one of those devices like this...

or should i just get one with the ide-usb no power like this...

    If its external, you'll need
    1. a data connection, and
    2. a power connection
To fulfill the first requirement w/USB 2.0, I recommend this (the non-powered version; they also have a powered version that uses a wall wart, but unless you're using an inverter, this is useless to you). Both adapters support 2.5" (notebook drives) and 3.5" (desktop drives) drive connectors.

For power, you'll need a regulated +12v (and probably +5v...) for 3.5" drives, or +5v (I believe ATM) for a slimline (notebook) [C|DV]D drive or HDD (unsure of ampere/wattage requirements). Either tap the power in your computer for this, or come up w/another external supply. Oh, and you'll need ground, of course.

EDIT: just looked at the links to eBay that you posted. Yah, thats basically what you'll get from the link(s) I provided. Get whatever's cheaper. Keep in mind the power requirements.

so you really think i'll need both 12v and 5v for the one dvd drive?

    i'll just make a 10-12ft molex extension i'm thinking...

off current topic but related to the power requirements, i have a usb hub that requires 5v, i can just tap into another molex and pull that to the front, or could i pull off that new molex extension i'm making... could i power 2 usb hubs off a 5v line?

Not sure - but the molex (morex?) connector that comes out of a standard desktop PSU (and powers a 3.5" HDD or "desktop" [C|DV]D drive) supplies 4 wires: 2x GND (black), 1x +12v (yellow), and 1x +5v (red), if that helps.

Sure, as long as you don't surpass the amperage limit of the power source.
