I currently have my harddrive a few inches away from the mobo. But my IDE cable is pretty long. Could I cut the cable here,
and plug in the supposed "slave" part into my motherboard, and the harddrive to the "master" part?

the logical solution would be to try it... then cut if it works. cutting the cable isn't going to affect anything, so as long as it works with the other two connectors before cutting, it'll work after. (just make sure you cut it CLEANLY... I cut an IDE cable a while back with crappy cutters and the wires frayed and shorted out, and it refused to work until I re-cut it cleanly)
Yes it works, I did it.
Also it is depend on how you have your drive detect by the mobo. If I put on cable select, doesn't work. Manual select, yes and must set jumper accordingly.

Use a big sharp machette to get a clean cut!
just thought, make sure you use the bit on the right not the left!
seriosuly, if you find you are getting frayed edges cut at a slight angle and stagger the ends. jsut very slightly though

Would it be smart to seal the end somehow? Put a few strips of electrical tape on the exposed end?
