just tap the antenna power to a switched 12V in your car, so the antenna is raised when the car is turned on.
I am using a laptop for my car pc with no head unit so i am looking for a usb fm radio but would like the antenna on my truck to only work when i listen to the radio. when it gets a +12v feed it goes up and when power is removed it goes down. any ideas on how i can make this happen and on what usb units are available in the uk that would work with frodo player or the like? thanks!

whatever usb radio you choose, if your up to it, open it up and use a multimeter to check a few lines and see if any go off and on when you switch somethign on it (ie. audio mute or an actual on/off function for the tuner). once you find that, wire it to a relay that switches a constant 12V line to the antenna.
otherwise, id go with ming's suggestion.
