audio w/o a soundcard possible?

I have a via board and i'm planning on mounting it on a case that does not have room for a pci card so now i'm looking for other options for sound. So far it looks like i'm going to end up with a usb sb audigy card. Since i have to spend the money I want to explore all my options and I came up with this idea.

I was wondering if i could take advantage of my mobo's digital audio output and run it to a processor like this one:

(or if anyone has a better suggestion please post it)

I wonder if anyone has done something like this or what the pros and cons would be.

(search came up with nothing useful, but i could have used the wrong keywords)

I was thinking about doing that with the decoder box from my video;ogic speakers but unfortunately it has spdif in and my mobo has optical out!

well...i guess to avoid some discussion...the title should have maybe read 'high quality sound with onboard soundcard' since we are getting the dig audio signal from the onboard sound.
