Its all doable, except for the car ignition. Do you really want to wait until your laptop starts up so you could turn the car on?
Hello, I'm new to this community. I have spent a lot of time on this forum doing research and planning my project and i have some questions.
I'll get right to the point. I have a laptop in my dash, and i want it to control my ignition, sun roof, and a few other things... through the printer port.
Please forgive me if this has been discussed before, i have spent days researching the subject with little success. Im not worried about input, and ill write the software myself. although I do not have much experience working with electronics.
i know i would need a type of electronic switch. Iv found out that what im looking for may be a "relay". My plan is to feed a relay power through the printer port to complete the circuit that would start the car, or whatever the relay is connected to.
Any advice, tips, or ideas would be appreciated.
Power to the laptop is not something im currently worried about. This is hypothetical, so im taking it one problem at a time.
there was a thread somewhere discussing the ignition, I will try to find it, i think it was from a while back. The consenous if I remember was that it was impractical even if it was possible.
The plan is to keep the computer in either hibernation or stand by. I drive every 3-14 hours, no longer. If the car is ever retired for some time the laptop will be powered down.
in addition im confident i can lower the boot time to 20 seconds or less with a little work and hack.
It should lower the chances of theft, considering nobody would know where to look for a key hole or wires to hot wire.
Thanks a lot Alti!
That thread helped a lot, and gave me some new ideas of how to approach it.
