The Panansonic CD/DVD drive? I think they make more than one.
I have a Panasonic CD/DVD CW-8123B (slim, slot-load). IIRC, it will only run as master on it's own channel.
I hope that helps.
I'm having problems getting anything attached to the middle of the IDE cable to work. Is there a pin configuration for the Panasonic CD/DVD drive or something? I've tried the primary and secondary IDE sockets, only stuff in the 'master' position recognizes. I have an Epia MII12000

Yeah *the* one
At least the only one in the MP3Car store. Yeah, that helps a bunch. Where'd you find that out at anyway? Or just trial and error? Luckily, I had a second IDE cable laying around, but how much space do they think we have in these damn cases?
Yeah, trial and error.
And I believe that the drive was originally designed for laptop use, so...
Try swapping Molex connectors. I had one with a pin spread open and the drive wasn't powering up.

I swapped cables, I swapped positions on the cables, I swapped power connectors, I swapped primary and secondary IDE ports, I swapped till I could swap no more. Definitely seems like it wants to be by itself. Does anyone have this drive on the same cable as a hard drive? If not shouldn't it be in a FAQ somewhere?
your slimline->ide adapter probably doesn't support slave setting ...

Its not about slimline to IDE adaptor. In fact, CW-8123B does not support master/slave setting feature, it is hardwired to a master position instead. There is no way how to make it detected as slave on any channel. The only chance is to connect it to the second channel, where it will be detected as master device.
That's some handy info to know, now which faq to put it in...
you should put optical drived on a diff chanel to hds anyway, as optical drives are slower, and it works on a bus it will only be as fast as the slowest thing.
