On the last computer I built, I used two ($120 each) Geil 512 meg sticks, and when XP installer was copying files from the CD, it hung at close to the same place every time. Ran memtest, got tens of thousands of errors on one of the sticks, all within the 411 and 412th megabytes. Had to RMA both sticks and waited an extra 2 weeks to get the computer running. So yeah, it sounds like the problems you are having could very well be from the ram.

On a side note, I'm building a computer for my girlfriend right now, and got a 512mb stick of 35 dollar Rosewill ram. Memtest shows no errors, even with OC'd speeds and timings. Take what you want from that.

Where do you run the memtest? Is it a BIOS function or is it a stand alone app (or OS thing)? I have a server that is showing similar failures, so I'm thinking the ram is the culprit.

You download the proper version and extract it. Then run the makedisk program. Then just put the floppy in the computer and restart (have bios seek the floppy, and make floppy the first boot device). Then it will start the program

Ouch, don't tell me your carputer has a floppy drive (Hint: memtest runs from bootable CD or USB key just as fine)

Yeh, all my computers have a floppy drive. I was mad when my friend's laptop didn't have a floppy. Its because I needed to put the silicon images contorller drivers on a floppy because windows setup asks for them, otherwise it won't see an HD.

You can do the same with CD - along the lines "windows xp bootable cd," there is a software that burns CD with boot loader and drivers making it appear 2.88Mb floppy to the computer. I used it to load new BIOS in my motherboard.
