m10000 slow load

ok, ive reset the bios numerous times, in the bios setup it shows the harddrive on the primary master, the dvd drive on the secondary master. when i try to load windows it goes through the initial blue screen setup and then instead of rebooting to windows to finish the install it boots back to the initial loading screen. it is an original xp disk, this happens regardless of whether i have the cd drive to boot first or not, the only things connected are the motherboard, ram, psu, dvd drive, harddrive, keyboad, mouse and monitor. with my other harddrive i had gtten all the way through the windows install but then it stopped recognizing that harddrive so i got a new one. does anyone have any idea whats going on here, did i screw something up? im going insane here

i just want to say thank you very much, this was driving me nuts for the past two days. i removed the jumper from the harddrive and the bios no longer hung and everything went completely smooth, it was like a new computer. i don't understand why that would cause that, it was set to master

No, its an ibm gxp 120 (60gig) .... it was pulled from my own system when i replaced my raid array with 7200.8s recently so I know its fault free.

Wait, so it's a WD drive? I found that some WD drives are incopatible with some mobos, but it's not the case with M10000. I have a WD drive on it, and no problems. Trythis, in BIOS, select LBA mode for HDD. This solved the same problems with other mother boards.

This is because some (not all, ive found) modern hard drives only want the master/slave pin in place when there are 2 devices on that ide channel. Some, like your hard drive, will freak out if the pin is set, but there isnt another device on the channel.

The first time it happened to me, it took me quite a while and a bunch of researching before I figured out what was happening...
