    m10000 slow load

i started setting up my computer yesterday and its just been giving me hell, the bios takes over a minute to load, i set almost everything to disable in the settings and shut of the slave for each ide channel. it seemed to be hanging looking for the ide drives, i stored my hd on the bios so it would't search for it, but it wouldn't let me for the dvd drive, and now after trying a bunch of time my hd isn't even recognized and its asking for a boot disk. could the slow loading be caused by a messed up hd, would that cause the bios loading to hang? please help, this is driving me nuts

What DVD player are you using? Is it the one from the MP3Car store?

If so, then make sure that device is using its own IDE channel and is the master. It has a hard time if it's sharing the same IDE channel as the hard drive (at least in my experience).

It could be caused by a HDD malfunction, but I seriously doubt it.

How is the DVD drive hooked up. Is it hooked up via the secondary IDE cable, or is it slave on the primary IDE cable. If so, this situation happens if they are both master or slave. Solution, either hook the DVD via the Secondary IDE cale, or insert a jumper to put the DVD drive on slve mode.

Try running the system with the DVD unplgged, and see if it's still there...I doubt you'll have problems then.

im thinking that its the hd because i took it out of my roommates old computer that had a bunch of problems. i have the hd on the primary ide channel and set it to master and the dvd drive is the same one from the mp3car store but i got it somewhere else, but its on the second ide channel so i dont think that its the problem, guess ill have to get a new hd and hopefuly that'll solve it. is there any difference in loading times of a ide hd vs. a laptop hd? is one substantially quicker?

    Slow boot

Unplug everything except ram and video. Go into the bios and load default settings.

When you reboot the system it should go though POST and bring up a message like

"BOOT DISK NOT FOUND, INSERT DISK TO CONTINUE"

This should take at the most 15 seconds.

If it takes longer you might want to reflash the bios on your board.

    Otherwise you got funky hardware.
Spent all my money on carputers now I have to work a real job.

yea its gotta be the hard drive, i unplugged everything and i didnt do anything to the bios settings cause it went to the "BOOT DISK NOT FOUND, INSERT DISK TO CONTINUE" before i could hit delete, took like 5 seconds. oh well off to circuit city for a new hd.

my 10k had a habit of hanging on boot, right around the same point, i have seen at least one other post the same too, and for me, it was only by playing with bios boot options that I got it so it boots each time- since i set the HDD on manual, lba, pio mode4 and auto, and the dvd on auto, large, mode4, auto it boots and reboots without problems or hangs. You may have changed so much that your bios has all sorts of settings you dont need- id clear your cmos and try it again (remove battery for a few mins if you dont knwo how to do that) and set the bios up fresh.

A desktop HDD runs at 7200RPM, and a laptop one is a little slower. I don't think the difference is all that noticeable.
