Cool Will this PC Spec do or should I start from Scratch?

Hey everyone, Cool site, read about it in a UK PC mag called PC Extreme, they did an article on Carputers.

I've become addicted, I donít even have a car yet, but my aunt is selling her old Golf, 1995 with 26k miles on the clock for E1,200($1,500 or £800) and Iíll prob end up buying it off her. She got a brand new 1Series, btw

I'm defiantly gonna but a Pc in it as Iíve been into modding and electronics since I've been about 10, Iíd also have no problem trying a bit of fiberglassing or bondoing

My question is, I have a few spare pc's lying around (about 10) ranging from a pre 386, up to a AMD-K6-2 450 [And there could be a P III 800 lying around somewhere], I've got about 128 Mb of ram for it too, it runs Half-Life grand.

I also have a USB 2.0 PCI card and a 7.1 sound card lying around if they need to be used

So would this spec of a PC be good enough for a carputer, would an Opus PSU handle this board or do i need a mini-ITX?

I donít want to spend money on a small form factor mobo if I donít have to, insurance is gonna cost me in the region of E3-4K

    Cheers Guys

    First off, welcome.

An OPUS would definitly handle anyt of those systems. You got people running Athlon XPs and P4 with an OPUS.

As far as your specs, it is all dependent on what you wanna do with you system. However, if you have a working P3-800, I'd recommend going with that. I think then you would be able to running Windows XP (with the visuals turned off/down). Think 128MB of RAM is the minimum though.

Take a look around. There's plenty to learn here.

Yeah, itís a cool site, cheers

I donít mind buying some stuff if i have to, I'll be purchasing a FX-53 system for myself online during the summer anyway, so i can get extra ram or a slim-line DVD drive if I need to

I'd like to be able to do most of the stuff here, watch TV, play DVDs, do GPS, use it as a carkit, get the net on it, Use it for a bit of War-Driving, Play some emulated games on it, maybe CS, and obviously play MP3s

I've a USB 2.0 PCI card and a 7.1 sound card lying around if they need to be used

    Thanks

Ok, apparently my mother needed the 800Mhz PC for a server out in work, damm DNS servers and primary domain controller c**p!

So is a 450Mhz good enough or should I splash out during the summer?

I need a Carputer, but i need a car first

Yeah, Basically All that, I plan on getting a Lilliput or a Xenarc from the store, i still have to get a car so i have to decide on motorized or whether I'll do as Bondo Job myself

The PC is currently sitting in my Room, it happily Plays Half-Life (the first one I wish it was the second) and its got USB2, onboard sound and graphics, but i do have a spare 7.1 soundcard lying around

I also have 2 20Gig UATA drives lying around but Iím gonna need 2 get a UATA card to get them working, I might make it a RAID card while I'm at it
