when you splice the usb extension cable, you will see 4 wires, red, black, yellow and green..

the red and black are the ones we want to modify... the yellow and green can be left in tact...

right, I follow that, I just am trying to understand what this is doing... so I plug the extension cable into my hub, then the 5 volt wires to a modified ps2 connector... this just seems like I'm tying my two 5 volt sources together... I'm not sure what this is supposed to do, thats all.

I don't think you follow... you are NOT tying your 2 5v lines together...

right now, I AM ONLY USING 2 WIRES FROM THE USB PORT on the PC

you do this BEFORE your hub, the extension cable will be connected between the PC and the hub, the PC end of the extension cable connects the yellow and green wires to the usb port on the PC, the red and black wires now go to the hacked ps/2 cable... THIS DOES NOT TIE YOUR 2 5v LINES TOGETHER... your hub has circuitry to keep the 5v seperate, but not activate unless it see's the 5v, therefore your hub is activating off of the ps/2 port, and powring from its own 5v...

this makes the PC's 5v out of USB not used anymore, since this is what doesnt always turn on and off correctly...

Oh, Ok I follow now.. unfortunately my first hub inline is unpowered so that won't work. So my ps2 port switches off when the computer goes off?

Could I power that unpowered hub off of the ps2?

yes, thats what its for... instead of just activating it(like in the case with a powered hub), it will power it too... your ps/2 should switch off with the computer (or you would see your optical mouse stay lit if you ever used one on it)

All we are doing is ditching the 5v that the USB port gives out, and stealing the 5v from the ps/2 port. It will work with any usb config, powered or non powered... its essentially the same thing, just powered off a different bus.

Ok, supposing that I was to do this, does anybody know how much I can draw off of that ps2? does it have a over current protection circuit like usb does? If I could get rid of the power inverter I would be really excited!
