Really doesn't matter. Most people say mount it vertically or sideways just to be sure the read/write heads don't crash during bumps, but I have mine mounted flat and live in upstate NewYork with the WORST roads, never had a problem.

    Basically wherever you have space!

I recommend using the screws that come with the hard drive.

Seriously, you give us no frame of reference whatsoever. There's far to little information to be able to assist you in your hard drive mounting plight.
Is your PC in a case or not? Is it in the glove box? Behind the dash? In the trunk? Under a seat?
Is the hard drive 3.5" or 2.5"? Maybe it's an old 5.25 double-height behemoth?
Now where is there adequate space for the hard drive?

You ever wonder why the doctor asks so many damned questions?
He's gathering information in order to make a proper diagnosis and recommend a workable solution!!!!

INFORMATION, n00b. It's not just for taking exams.

Lastly, if you have a solution, why are you asking for other suggestions?
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

The rule of thumb is to mount with the platters aligned facing the same way as the wheels.

My HDD is mounted using standard screws, hard against the case.

I have an expensive suspension system also, it came free with the car.

Oh, and I'll bet a LOT I have worse roads here in the English countryside than new york.
