Via USB issues - dead hardware?

    Hi all,

Feeling very frustrated this morning, so figured I'd post and see if anyone else has had the same issues/has any ideas about my problem.

I've been using the car pc for a few months now, and apart from getting water in my gps and inconsistent boots (other issues) I've now got a serious problem.

A few weeks ago my touchscreen decided to stop working. I figured it was a driver issue so i fiddled around a bit and then found it was the usb port on my m10k. The screen was plugged into the lower rear port, with a hub on the top port running a 54mbps wireless dongle and an x10 remote.
I found that if I plugged devices into the bottom port they didn't register in windows. Power on the port (+5) must be ok as I have a zippy light up keyboard that will still illuminate when plugged in.

I swapped the touchscreen to the top port and unplugged the other bits for the time being, they're not essential. Now, 2 weeks later I turned on the screen and windows xp popped up the 'Unknown Device' hardware balloon. The touchscreen has stopped working. I looked in device manager but have no listing for 'Unknown Device'. If i plug the keyboard into this port, the caps/scroll/num led's illuminate but I can't switch the backlight...
I'm guessing this port has popped too!

    So...

    1) Is the VIA usb shaky for anyone else?
    2) Should I reload the OS and hope it works again? (The USB root hubs and host controllers all show up in device manager ok)
    3) Why would they have broken in the 1st place?

Feeling very frustrated at the moment. Seems that everytime I need the pc (i.e: taking a long journey) then something goes wrong...

Please help if you can!! :-)

I have the MII 10000 it has a USB header as well so you have 4 ports. Does you model have a header as well? Try those if you do for the time being.

Also try re-installing the touch screen driver. Mine seems to disappear from time to time and get the unknown device blah blah as well. But if your keyboard is not working seems could be the port.

Also try reinstalling the Via drivers or perhaps XP.

I've had this issue before... the VIA chipset HATES having USB devices moved around on it. Even removing the USB 2 ports with nothing connected will cause this. The ONLY way I could ever get it to work again was to reinstall windows with all my USB devices plugged in during install and never take them out...
