Small IR receiver help to configure / creative remote

Ok, I am a little confused on how what to do with a IR receiver I bought off of ebay. someone here recommended these and it was fairly cheap. I liked it because I could keep it real hidden.

However, the whole IR thing is ****ing me off. I thought these IR receivers would just pick up my remotes that I use for my Audigy already, well this is not the case. Can anyone help mw with this? I need to troubleshoot this IR receiver to see if it even works. My questions are...

1) how can I test this serial Ir reciever to see if it even works properly?
2) if it works, can I have someone help program my RM-1500 or PCDVD creative remotes to work with it and girder? I really only want basic functions such as volume up and down and what not to work in Frodoplayer.

I believe that a program called "girder" is what you want.

Ya, I think girder will be able to do all this for me....just get confused everytime I get into it. Is there an easy way or a template for girder and these popular remotes?
