Biostar + Mobile Athlon XP (Thoroughbred core)

I'm getting a Biostar M7NCG and I'm deciding whether to put in a newer Mobile Athlon XP-M (Barton core - starts at 2200+) or an older Mobile Athlon XP (Thouroughbred - freqs of 1600+ to 2200+ aka "mobile athlon 4").

Anyone know if the older Thouroughbred core has any probs with the biostar? I know the barton + Biostar has bios issues that are easily solved:

Anyway, there's no difference in power in the ones I'm looking at (35 watts), but since people frequently underclock the XP-M anyway, why not go with the cheaper ($40 vs. $80) cpu?

So...Anyone using the older mobile XP with the biostar? If not, I might just go with the Barton, which I know works.

Nobody has yet gotten back to me on whether it works with that mobo, but mobile athlons support speed stepping... like a laptop does when it's on battery power, it lets the CPU clock itself up or down as needed, to save power but also give you full processing power when you need it.

I am very curious to see if it works out with that mobo, as I am going to be buying one in a month or two and would very much love to be able to run a 2200+ athlon mobile and have it boot fast and load programs fast, but clock itself way down and use much less power when it's just sitting there playing music.

Granted, you can hack a regular XP to fool the computer into thinking it's a mobile... but not everyone wants to do bridge painting, and I think your chances of getting speed stepping working might be less than with a straight mobile chip.

Personally, considering the cost of other carPC components, the $40 difference isn't that significant to me, since it gives me a little more hope for getting speed stepping working.

i have mobile athlons, a 1300 and a 1500, (1.2 and 1.4ghz) got em way cheap.
they work in any socket A board. but they run at like 900mhz cause of the multiplier sits at like 8X instead of 10.5X like it would in the laptop, so get a board with multiplier control, or u can use a program like crystalCPU, or do the "pin mod". crystal cpu is like on the fly over clocking kinda. windows will not show the actuall clock when u use programs.

still, mines runs at 996mhz FSB set to 333 instead of 266, its pretty quik, and low power.

I bought this board (refurbished from Newegg) as well as a 1.1GHz AMD Athlon Mobile on eBay for 25 bucks. It shows up as a 1.1GHz in XP. I've underclocked it all the way down to 500MHz with no problems. The voltage is very important as well as the FSB and multiplier. I set the multiplier to 11 and the FSB to 100 and it works great!
