Yes, you need to put a fuse in there, for no other reason than to prevent a fire if the wire get's shorted.

Any time you wire something to the battery it needs a fuse. There must be a fuse between the battery and everything. Why?
If the wire shorts out, you could melt the wire, and at the worst, blow the battery.
