    new automotive harddrive

was just reading about this new harddrive seagate is making that was specificaly designed for extreme conditions such as automotive use, it can withstand impacts of up to 2 G's and temps of -30C to 85C, suposed to be out later this year from what I read, definatly would be nice for who live in area's with extreme temps.

Look like Seagate people did search on carputer.
Anway, it will be cost an arm and a leg and probably not much capacity compare to regular drive on the market today.

yeah, the capacity isn't huge, 20, 30, and 40GB, I know for me that's plenty though, I have a 30GB drive right now and have plenty of room on it still.

Only 2G impact? That's kinda low......
I remember having a sticker on an old hard drive that said "Warning: This drive can only sustain 60G's of force"

I've got a 200gig HD in my car, and it's down to 43GB free. It's been in my car for almost a year now, I think, sitting on the floor under my driver seat (USB case).

    .....and it's doing fine.

BTW, car interiors are already extreme. On a warm day, the inside of a car can get to over 150 degrees F, especially if it's dark.

That would not be operating schock though, there is a difference, most hard drives can handle up to 200G when not operating.
I have found you an argument; I am not obliged to find you an understanding.

Yeah the 2G quoted is for vibrations - ie a sustained 2G vibration while operating. That is pretty good going. I would like to see what the non-operating shock is but i suspect it is about 200G like normal drives.

I have been waiting for these to come out since Sony introduced their HDD MP3 playing headunits.

5400 rpm and small capacites though

but wait for a year and they will be over 100Gig and faster. I say just get a normal drive with a warranty and keep it backed up on your home PC. or if you have access to lots of drives use old ones.

How many G's doe it take to bend the frame of a light truck?

My Maxtor 3.5 inch drive handled it just fine. Give me your extra money if you are going to buy this.
