USB Hub - Powered or non powered?

Is there really a good reason to run a self powered USB hub instead of a bus powered in a car pc environment? To the best of my knowledge, I am not running out of OPUS power anytime soon. Is it ok to use the unregulated voltage of my car directly to power a powered USB Hub. I'd say no more than 4 devices will be run off it.

Powering the USB hub through an LM 12V regulator will be better than using a non-powered hub. There is only so much power the USB bus can provide.

The more power you can conserve from your DC PSU the better.

Now, if I buy a self powered, will it power from the bus if it's not plugged in? Or do I have to power it externally at all times?

I believe a powered hub that has no power on will use 5V from the USB bus.

Yeah, self powered is what I have (Well, it can do both, but I leave the switch set on self powered). It just takes 5 volts from the USB bus to power itself, really is a lot easier.

Self powered will only yield 500mA
    Powered hubs will give 2A+

BUS-powered hubs that have no external power will only put out 100ma per port. For touchscreens, this is enough, for most other things it isn't. SELF-powered hubs that have external power put out the full 500ma per port, which some devices need.

It depends on what devices you have. Cameras, WiFi, need 500ma.

Will a USB GPS normally run off a regular BUS-powered port? (i.e., at 100 ma) ?
