How to use an external monitor with the laptop closed

Hi, I have a question can I use an external monitor with my laptop closed?
I found a way to do it, but doesnt work completely, if I go to Display Property/Screen Saver/Power/Advanced, you will se an option under Power buttons "When I close the lid of my portable computer: I can choose "Do nothing" but when I choose this option and close the LCD all the screen goes black, with image but no backlight...
    Any suggestion?
    Thx...

The problem is that sometimes it may not be dependent on Windows or the OS. The laptop may have it setup so that the LCD cuts out when you close the button.

Also, the 'Do Nothing' feature of Windows just prevents it from going into Standby and such.
