I think you are asking too much. I would block off the vents totally, so no heat will get to it during te winter.

Of course, you can always change the HU, or get rid of it, although I personally don't like that idea. Yes, moulding looks great/better.

There is a guy on these boards who made a screen that flips down, and up, over his stock HU. I don't remember his name, but a search might locate it. I think he has a BMW. Also, I I distinctly remember him using the term jeweler in his post.

Yeah, that's a pretty slick install...
Molded is the way to go - it'll look so much better that way. I seem to remember someone using the stock HU faces to make a 'plate' that covered the lcd face when the car was parked. I thought that was a pretty decent idea to hide it from the theives.

I was going to try and save the center vents in my install but I decided to block off the ducting with a piece of luan and some foam.

I'll look for the thread with the face plate.

    HI,
It is tough to mount the screen, I have 2 ideas

This I tried, make a bracket that attaches to the top 2 radio removal tool slots and attach the monitor to this bracket and then make a brace that goes into the monitor's
slide slot in the rear and attach the other end to a velcro strip between the vents.

The second idea is to use all 4 slots to mount entirely over the head unit and somehow
swing the monitor out the way to operate the HU.

Third idea is to get a cell phone mount, this Audi mount requires that you remove the radio, bolt in the mount to the right side, then reinstall and mount to that. Seems like the best solution.

    This is my hardest decision,

and by the way you may wanna check this out- I signed up for the beta test :

Testers needed: VW, AUDI, BMW stock headunit USB adapter !

    Can' wait to get it!
Iwill ZPCgx 2.4ghz cel, 256mb pc2700, external combo drive, 80gb 2.5 laptop drive, xp pro, usb gps, 7 in Lilliput TS , carnetix CNX1900. All mounted ghetto- still experimenting and tweaking.

Hey! Really the best idea I think!
    Really cool.

By the way, your link is really interresting! I'm currently working with the same stuff but for peugeot car, and I was thinking how to do the same on audi.

    Thank you.

Wow, this is the thread I've been looking for!!! Can't believe I didn't see it till now!!!

So did any of you settle on any of the mounting options? I've been toying around with the idea of vent mounts, which would allow me to keep the stock HU and (hopefully) still allow me to remove the LCD whenever I need to. But I've not been able to find any good vent mount that would allow me to do that.

The cell phone mount seems like a good idea too, but any ideas of how to get a cell phone mount to attach to the xenarc?

I have the 2002 Audi A4 (as pictured earlier in this thread) and just started looking at putting together an PC for the car.

Is there any problem with dumping the whole HU, putting in a double-DIN mount, then mounting the Xenarc manual flip-up on top and a new single-DIN HU down below? I don't necessarily feel like ripping up the dash.
