bad Idea.
I read some time ago someone who suggested that you could hook the power of a full sized DVD rom up directly to the battery and that it wouldn't do any harm to my system.
The data rail of the DVD rom is all running @ 5 Volts, it is just the motor in the drive that uses the full 12V. Since the drive is able to regulate its speed etc, do you think it would be fine to run it directly off the batter? Giving it anywhere from 11.5-14V?
bad Idea.
Is this where the witty comment goes?97 Black pearl Mazda Miata MX-5 Carpc V2? maybee..
Any further details on why? Or what will happen if I do do it?
No do not do it.
You need a regulated power supply.

Defo do not try it. The DVD Rom needs a regulated power supply to ensure that it receives a constant voltage. You'll fry it if you hook it directly to the battery.
