Here is the answer to 1,2 and 3
I found this website about a month ago... there is alot of great information. I am getting ready to put a carputer in my 2000 Mustang. I have searched and searched the forums but am uncertain about a couple things...
Do people normally run everything off of 1 power supply or 2?
Should an Opus 150 power my system? Or should I look at other mb/processor combos? I used the power calculator and came up with 178 watts peak on the Athlon XP and 160 watts peak on the Duron.
Also, how do I find the consumption at different voltages?
Here is what I have come up with:
Ahtlon XP 2800 (not the mobile)
1 stick 512 meg DDR
80 gig 5400 RPM 3.5 IDE hard drive
Chaintec AV-710 Sound Card
PCI Wireless Card
Delorme USB GPS
XM PCR Radio
DLink USB Bluetooth Adaptor
DVD Rom Drive
Lilliput or Xenarc 7" Touchscreen (can't decide which one)
AMD Duron 1.2 GHz
2 sticks 128 Meg PC100
Everything else the same
I would like to have the best performance possible, since I will not have any head unit in the car. I will be running straight into the amps from the soundcard. I prefer to use the processors, motherboard, memory and hard drive I have listed above since they are all laying around the house. The only components I would need to buy for either system is the sound card, opus power supply and the screen. From my research it looks like I am cutting it real close on power consumption, so would I be better off biting the bullet and buying an Athlon Mobile processor and 2.5 hard drive?
I have some pictures of my car at mustang.clevelandbusinessconsultants.net I am really looking forward to having the carputer.
I am not sure if I am missing something, or the answers are not there... Since I found the site a month ago, I have been looking through the posts for 1-2 hours per night.Originally Posted by thanatos106
I guess my main questions are, I know for power consumption I would be much better off with different processors, but is anyone successfully running an Athlon XP near 2800 without using invertors? If so, are you using 1 dc-dc power supply or 2?
Is it even possible to run 2 (I thought I saw someone mention that they were running 2, but have been unable to find that post again.
I just finished “officially” installing my carputer this week after a LONG arduous one and a half years. Work and the Girlfriend took most of my time. I used a 150 opus at first and it worked with my setup but I’m using a mini-itx board and 2.5 HD so that might not help you much with your questions. But since I have tried many different setups with my 2000 mustang, I can help if you have any questions on how to set things up with installation and such. I’m going to post my project soon and show how I replaced my stock CD and head unit and fabricated my screen into the dash.

I've tried the cheapo GPS Receivers... Delorme & Pharos... Get rid of them! Pieces of garbage! Delorme's sensitivity is PATHETIC. Pharos' longevity is DEPRESSING! I kept exchanging/returning so much at Best Buy, that the clerk got mad at me.
I wanted a "Socket" GPS receiver, but not enough money... but very impressed from seeing in my buddy's carputer. So I went with the Holux GR-213... Absolutely awesome in sensitivity.
DONOT SPEND $129 for Microsoft S&F or for Delorme Street Atlas...
Instead, get the Holux GR-213 for 75 bucks
get either Destinator or Iguidance for ~150...
You'll be glad you did. A extra $100 or so bucks goes a LOOONNNNNGGGG way.
The Holux looks good, I am gussing its better then my BU-303, is it water proof?
