Arrow M7NCG400, Athlon XP-M 2400+, Rikaline 6010 USB: If you have all these please read.

If you have a Biostar M7NCG400, Athlon XP-Mobile 2400+, and a Rikaline 6010 USB GPS, please let me know by answering this thread. I think my mobo might be faulty, but need to confirm with others that this combination does indeed work correctly. In my setup, the GPS data stream via USB stalls frequently.

Sorry for the cross-posting, but I started a thread in the GPS section thinking my issue was entirely GPS related, but after much investigation I am leaning towards the hardware (the Biostar mobo and CPU) being the culprit.

For reference, original thread describing my issue is located here

just so you know it definatly isn't you CPU as for the motherboard check the USB controller it might be set 1.0 instead of 2.0 which could potentionally ruin you GPS hookup... otherwise check for newer BIOS for the MB... as a big problem with Nvidia is faulty drivers... only things i can think of, hope they help

USB is set to 2.0 in the BIOS.

I am using the NVidia drivers contained in the CD-ROM packaged with the Mobo. I tried downloading latest drivers, but those links arebroken on the Nvidia website. Regardless, the latest drivers for this mobo are from 2003, and I am almost positive the ones on my CDROM are the latest.

Lastly, I did manage to download the latest BIOS. Worth trying that, will do tonight.

You should try getting the latest BIOS for sure... The ones on the disks ARE outdated...

Wow, I just realized something. I was looking for latest drivers on the Biostar website... however, makes more sense to go to the Nvidia site and get the unified drivers. They have version 5.10 from 2004, and I believe those are indeed newer than the ones included in the Biostar CDROM.

God, I hope this solves my issue, or I am going to shoot myself.

    I'll post results here!

So I went ahead and updated the Nforce2 drivers as well as the BIOS. I am still having the same problem.

Guys, I am begging you now If you happen to have the same hardware combo, and are not experiencing problems, PLEASE POST HERE CONFIRMING THAT THIS COMBO WORKS. I am about to RMA this board, only have 3 days left!!!!

    Angry

Well, I found the problem. I connected the GPS through a powered USB hub, and it works fine. Then changed it back to the motherboard USB port, and it fails. Back to powered hub, all is fine again.
I actually left it running through the powered USB hub for full 10 hours, worked without issues.

So, apparently, the motherboard USB port is not able to maintain/feed proper power to the GPS device. It works for a few seconds/minutes, and then fails. Heck I sure don't want to have to install a powered USB device in my Car setup, as I am trying to keep this all as clean and lean as possible.

Lots of questions come to mind.
-How are others running USB GPS devices on their Biostar M7NCG400 ? Is my mobo faulty?
-Is there anything I can do through BIOS to fix this issue? Perhaps change a voltage setting?
-Could my PSU be the issue here? It seems to be very flaky at delivering constant/stable voltage on the 5V and 12V rails based on MBM5 readings.

Any help here would be appreciated. Still debating whether I should return this mobo and get a replacement.

EDIT: Also, why does this GPS work flawlessly on my other 2 home computers, when used on the standard bus-powered mobo USB ports? <confused>

    Thanks guys.

Well, no one can confirm please? I thought I was using a popular set up!

If you have a Biostar M7NCG400, and a Rikaline 6010 USB GPS:
Are you powering the GPS via on-board bus-powered USB?

    HELP!!!!
