    hard drive help

i just bought a western digital 80 gb hard drive and installed it to my system on "cable Select" and the old one is on "master". the system control panel picks up both drives but "my computer" only shows the older one which is the master. also whats wierd is that "my computer" shows the older drive as 2 drives even though it is one. it has always been like this though so i dont know if that is affecting the new drive. can anyone help me please thanks

Try setting the jumper on the new drive to secondary and see what happens. I had some problems with drives when I hooked them up as cable select. All I did was set the jumper behind the drive to secondary and it worked. Hopefully this helps, if not I would suggest contacting the company that makes the drive and check with their tech department.

Whenever you have 2 drives on 1 cable, you should jumper them appropriately. CS works fine if it's the only drive on teh cable, but even then I still set the jumper to what it's supposed to be.

    yeah, those are called "partitions"

if you set one drive on cable select, you should set the other one on cable select also. However, it's more reliable to just set one to master and one to slave and not mess with cable select at all... but in any case, mixing master/slave and cable select on the two drives is not a good idea.

then again, if control panel is picking them both up then it sounds like it's not a jumper problem. have you FORMATTED the new drive yet? you kinda need to do that before it will show up in 'my computer'... if you are running windows 2000 or XP pro, go to control panel > administrative tools > computer management > disk management. There you should be able to see the new drive, and format it.
But don't take it from me! here's a quote from a real, live newbie:
