    Post 20X4 VFD Hook-Up

How do I hook this up to a printer port? Is it the same as the LCD? Do I still need a 10K pot and 1K Pot? Can somebody please post a pic/diagram of how to hook-up a LCD Comp. VFD.

I've got the same VFD. The little black coil in the upper right came apart on mine.

This is the diagram from Mike Lynch's LCD plugin.

    Futaba VFD Connections

    Parallel Port
    (DB25) VFD
    (2) D0
    (3) D1
    (4) D2
    (5) D3
    (6) D4
    (7) D5
    (8) D6
    (9) D7
    (11) Busy
    (14) WR

tie pins 18 to 25 on the parallel port to ground.

Also note that when using a standard LCD plugin, lines 2 and 3 are reversed. I haven't had a chance to test it with Mike's latest plugin, but it shows it supports them natively.

Oh yeah...you don't need the pots.

Just out of curiousity, did you get that display recently on eBay? There was an auction for five of that exact model, I also got one.

Haven't tried hooking it up (since it won't be here for a couple more days), but I previously found a link in the archives to a schematic for parallel LCDs in general. My understanding is that this Noritake is supposed to act just like an LCD in terms of the data interface, so this should be accurate (except I would guess the brightness and contrast controls shown will not apply for a VFD).

I downloaded the schematic some time ago and am not sure who to give credit to for it originally, but I just put it on my website.

If the person who created this wants credit, I'll gladly put some text to that effect.... just let me know.

I did bid on it last night. Found the auction with 30 seconds left. But got outbided by 25 cents and didn't have enough time to up my bid, 5 seconds was left. He placed another one up today with "Buy it Now" for $25. I won that one. Hehe. I've seen another one also today. I was planning on getting a LCD, but when I saw a VFD for $30-25 i jumped very quickly.

I bought mine a couple of years ago. I had it in my first car with an MP3 player. I think I had it without a display for close to a year when I bought the VFD.

I got mine from vfd.mp3car.com when he was still around.

I got one of those 5 pieces on ebay the other day.

Not sure whether I'm going to use it in my car. I'll stick with inversed 4x40 to start and if I find visibility a problem, then I'll switch to the VFD.. otherwise I'm sure I can find some other uses. =)

Just picked up the next one on ebay for $25 also. I have no display now and was wanting to get a 4" lcd but this will do until I can get enough money to get a bigger lcd. Any info on how to get textand graphics to these via visual basic would be great so I can modify my player to display info to it. I currently am not using winamp so I would need to code it myself.
