If you really want Windows CE, you'll have to pay for both the developer kit and a device license from Microsoft, and they're usually expensive.

Windows CE is more properly called Windows Mobile, and there's a Mobile CE and XP versions.

There's a Windows Mobile CE trial version that you can download and try before you buy.

The trial version will let your device run for a limited time, usually 30 to 90 days, and you can't get around that, it's built in.

You'll need to use the development kit to build a target image for the system you're planning to run it on, and load the image onto the hard disk.


It's complicated and expensive, but certainly possible.

Well how about the fastest booting OS with a GUI? Is Microsoft completely out of the question? Or is XP tweakable enough?

start by going to the OS Optimization forum and read... yes XP is very tweakable. and the OS by itself doesn't make the system boot up quickly. "real" WinCE devices like PDA's or other devices require very low power and they typically go into standby mode. my Windows Mobile phone for instance is always on, but if I ever have to actually "boot" it, it's slower than my tweaked XP on CF card. running WinCE won't magically make your system boot up in 2 seconds.

Excellent point!! I never considered this at all, the fact they the actual boot time itself is soooooo slow on pocket pcs after a reset. Well before I head over there to begin the huge learning cycle, I have a hardware related question...

You got me thinking about the low power draw and I got to wondering about leaving this PC running. I would probably be forced to use an inverter because the average power supply puts out more than 12 volts correct?

I am curious about how many amps the average desktop power supply would draw? If it is less than 5 amps I think the computer will just run all the time because I am in my truck a several times a week. Does anyone else do this? Or do all start with a cold boot?

I recommend you go to the Mp3car store and buy "Car PC Hacks". i've never used an inverter, but from what I heard they're somewhat "wasteful" so it'd probably be a bad idea to keep your PC in standby using an inverter. nearly any question you have has been covered before and most likely some tried it already. so use the search tool...

Yes I am searching many topics now, have been since my first post. I am just noticing people are replying so I know that it is fairly active now for the questions. Is there by chance a nice chat room or IRC channel you guys use?
