    Carcomputer switch

Hey, i just installed a switch for my car computer. in the event that it locks up, i can easily access a switch near my emergancy brake to turn off the power to my power supply (battery power) by using a relay. I thought it was the coolest thing ever! Anyway, after i installed it and tried it out, i realized that the illuminated switch and relay are always on. This draws .24A when the computer is not on. I checked the specs on the relay and it requires 6 volts to turn on. THe relay has a resistance of 54ohms, so i figured if i put in another resister around 50 ohms, the voltage would be able 6 volts at the relay, and that would halve my current draw. If my current draw is .12A when the car is off, is that a lot? How much does a car normally draw when its off? I can always turn it off when i'm away from it for a week, but will this be enough to let it go overnight?

    thanks,

    Overnight? Probably not
    A week? Maybe
    More than that? Most likely

All depends on your your battery and charging system health
120mA is more than I'd allow to be consumed with the car off

If it's a SPDT relay, can you just reverse it so the relay is off but the carputer gets power. Then when you press your switch, it energises the relay and kills the power to the laptop.

good thought, but its an SPST. i'm thinking a switch alone w/ power the unit. its only about 6 or 7 amps and the switch does 30. i should just get a non illuminating switch

UPDATE: I removed the light up switch and installed a switch w/o and LED. i also installed a switch that connects to the Ignition wire and chooses to use the ignition or battery to connect to switched power of the car computer. This lets me shut off the power to the car computer if it locks up, or i don't want it to boot up AND lets me choose to let the ignition turn on the car computer or let it remain on when the car is off to pump gas or upload/download music from inside my apartment. Here is the basic wiring:

    B+ ---- switch ----------+----- Batt input
    |
CAR I ------------------- switch --- Ign input Opus power supply

    Gnd -------------------------- Ground input

kinda lousy but i hope that explains it. It works very well! the only thing it doesn't do is turn the switched power to off whent he car is on, but you can shut down the computer and flip the power button. I may add a "reset" button next.

    later!
