Got free PC - what should I spend money on upgrading?

    Hi,

I've been lurking for a couple of months now on this excellent forum and I'm getting ready to put my incar-pc together. I'm fortunate enough to have a Compaq N650 laptop as my donor PC.

This is an ex technicians laptop (from my company, which build/sells software) and is running a P3 1800mhz, with any 1Gb Ram, 30Gb 7200 HDD and has DVD Rom already.

If I want fast GPS and hi-quality DVD playback with the potential for gaming later on, what should I be looking to upgrade on the HW front? Anything?

Also I'm trying to understand what 'performance benefits' will I see from having that much RAM for 'free'?

Feel free to chip in with any suggestions. As the LT is 'free' I'd like to use as much as possible of it.

    Cheers

    1) GPS's don't come in speeds lots of folks are having fun with their GlobaSat BR-xxx
    2) 1g of ram will yield slower (than 512M) boots, shutdowns, and hibernation cycles, but once it's running it will be faster.
    3) You have more than enough CPU and RAM for DVD playback.
-- Others may offer advice w/respect to gaming if they choose. --I have none.

forget gaming unless you are talking pre-'00 games. laptops are notorious for having really crap graphics cards.

needless to say: if you are planning on dedicating it to be a carpc, all you really need to worry about is the RAM. drop it to 512 or 256 so you can get good boot times like grepzen mentioned. the HD space is sufficient, but feel free to upgrade. there really is no pro's or cons here.
