depends on your system

Im tyring to decide on an OS for my MP3 car.
It has to be one that allows multitasking because i want to use Winamp DVD and GPS. I basically want the fastest boot. But I dont want to have to learn Linux, too much trouble. I dont want DOS because basically it barely supports things and also I dont know all the easy commands. So basically It's either Windows ME, Windows 2000 (I love the idea of hibernation mode), Windows 98lite, or Windows 95lite. I can get Win98, 2000, and 95 all free through friends. But I have no idea about ME availability. Any suggestions will be apprectiated.

To give you an idea ; I'm running Win98lite on a p133 and it boots in one min( from power on to hitting play)
I've done most of the speed up tricks I know of (WinAmp as shell helped alot), short of upgrading the bios..

the best is win98 lite, it can boot as fast as 30 second.
oh, well that seems like too long for me. (talking about the 1 min., although 30 sec sounds pretty good) Thats why I want to do Win2000 with hibernation. Has anyone heard anything about how long it takes to come out of hibernation? One guy emailed me saying about 20 sec to come out and 15 to go in and another guy emailed me and told me 1min out and about a min to come out. Im guessing it depends on a processor speed ... a 333 what would u think?

I would say go with windows ME (note my post in software under "o heck ya, 30 seconds" topic by tim). The thing boots up amazingly fast without hibernation, for me, about 25-30 seconds, this includes winamp loading up (not as shell). Hibernation with windows me took me about 5 seconds to shutdown (note that it's the ram size that sets the time to hibernate. My home pc has 384mb and takes about 13-15 seconds). Buting up with hibernation should only take you 15-25 seconds depending upon your bios setup and the amount of RAM. Hope that helps you out.
I think it depends a lot on your BIOS too. It takes me about 30 seconds to boot into my player, but 25 seconds of that is the BIOS doing it's thing. 3-4 seconds after the loading DOS prompt arrives, I have a menu of CDs to choose from.Originally posted by HunterC47:
