    Talking RDS, ID3 and MP3

so I was playing around with my FM modulator last night and was having a bit of
trouble with what sounded like clipping. I had just got a new mp3 player and decided to try plugging that in as the source to see if I was actually clipping or if I had a bad sound card. I didn't have any mp3's on it (new, remember?) so I switched over to its FM tuner. And what to my wondering eyes should appear but RDS data streaming across my headunit! Come to find out, RDS data is embedded in the audio stream (yeah, actually thinking about it raises a 'well duh'), this got me thinking. What if we could take an ID3 tag and write it into an mp3 as RDS data? I have been googling around trying to find something that already does this and haven't come across much. I know that the RDS injectors for FM Transmitters seem to work right before the transmitter section, but does anyone know if it is technicaly possible to insert RDS data into the MP3 itself? I know that it may seem kinda nitch, but it would be killer for factory radio integration. If you assume a computer in the car playing the MP3s, it would seem possible to inject RDS realtime and use your factory stereo as a text display for alerts and what not.

Hmm. nevermind. looks like I was wrong, RDS is actually on a seperate 57khz signal that is modulated onto the original signal. So, can't encode an MP3 with RDS data. A lot of schematics exist to create a small RDS transmitter that will take data from a PC to inject RDS real time into a transmission, but that's about it. I guess my MP3 player was just sending that data along and my car stereo was picking it up. Drag.

I dont see why you are so dismissive of the idea. It would not take much coding to add output to a usb/serial device that can output the RDS signal. Maybe even use a cheap usb soundcard and another fm modulator if it could be hacked to right signal. If not use an FM bug type transmitter.

I am pretty sure i have seen some fm modulators that have an RDS capability though.

Would be very neet for people with OEM stereos with separate screens like renaults and vauxhalls.

Totally agree and in fact, I have several schematics that would be fairly easy to make that happen. I was hoping more for something inline with the MP3 though to make it that much more transparent.
