USB hub in front not functioning

I'm running a 10 ft extension cable from the carputer in the back to the front. If I use a hub, nothing works. If i plug in my touchscreen directly to the extension, it works fine.

I have a known good 5v feeding the hub from a carntix 1280. Seems like this should be plug and play but it isnt working. Any advice?

(I had the carnetix laying around so it powers my screen and provides a 5v source for my hubs in the front. I am using a CarPC Pro SDC and invertor on my p4 machine in the back. Could this be the issue? The Carnetix always powers up before the PC)

most hubs don't "need" to be powered. try removing external power.

also try using the hub on a seperate system, basicly use standard trouble shooting techniques, teast each part against/with known working componenets.

I had issues with using my old xenarc (serial with a serial->usb) and my new xenarc (straight usb) touchscreen off of a hub. The hub could be powered or self-powered and either way it doesn't work. However when I brought the hub inside and used a shorter (2') extension cable I could use the hub with the touchscreen. Like anything usb has its length limitations, it could just be that the hub is causing problems at the length.

Thanks gent, and yup, i did run some basic trouble shooting. Here are what I found:

Tried two hubs, no difference on each. Each are a different brand. Tried with and without the power supply. Tried disconnecting and reconnecting. Tried rebooting. Each shows no change. When i immediately plug in my hub, it lights up for a second and then turns off. Seems like it works at first, PC says "OK, its that hub" and then shuts it down.

Ran one of the hubs at the PC and it seemed to work just fine. I guess it comes down to the extension cable? Its just strange that the extension cable will work with 1 item but does not detect anything if a hub is used.

Could there be a possible fubar on a USB setting somewhere, as in a listing of the device in hardware needs to be deleted and reinstalled? (im just guessing here). Can i delete any mention of the USB hubs and start again? where would i do so?

From my own tests, it seems that a 10 foot cable to a hub then a 6 foot cable to the screen has occasional problems, but a 16 foot cable direct works fine.

The USB specs state that a USB cable may be 5m or 16 feet. I would have assumed that a hub would act as a repeater and improve the effective range, but the above seems to disprove this theory.

hmm, maybe i ill try connecting the hub at the pc, then plug the extension cable into it, and plug the touchscreen directly into the ext cable.
Just to check if its the distance from the PC that is messing with the hub.

Have people generally had issues with Belkin hubs?

Did you try plugging the cable into a different port on the back of the PC. I've found that sometimes the USB won't work on one port but if I switch it, it works fine.

Its probably just too much voltage drop over the cable. A different/better cable is worth a try, but its likely going to depend on your motherboard. You could also try a hub at the motherboard end to boost the voltage.

I am using a 16' usb extender to go from the pc in the rear to the front. I also have a small 4 port belkin connected to that hub. Everything is powered just in case. It works though I do have a problem with the amount of USB hardware I hook up in total. I have done extensive testing in this area and I found that problems can arise if 1.) your USB controllers are not performing that good (Intel seems to be the best) and too if all your devices bring down the USB bus's performance so low that devices fail to at boot or can fail during operation.
