Red face Docking station, improvement or not?

I wonder if there is ANY advantages in having a docking station on your car-pcs laptop connection to Your car?

Is there any integration-feature to the car that ALWAYS require soldering to the internal parts of the actual laptop/chassi of the pc and therefor makes the docking station "overkill" ?

Quite important as a docking station does cost som extras

Well, you can take out the laptop without disconnecting all your cables.
Some docks provide more functionality. (Additional PCI slots, SCSI, etc)

I can't think of anything that you couldn't do to the dock instead of the laptop (power button, etc). Though some of the generic USB ones, don't imagine they actually have a power button (but I could be wrong). So if it doesn't have a power button, you still need to address power on.

Wether it's worthwhile or not from a cost perspective, depends on what your options are for docking your system.

Sorry, forgot to type "space", Its more a question of space when I ask If I need a docking station. I am interested in the following functions on the pc.

    FM-radio
mp3, Divx, dvd, mpg, wav playback (harddrive)
cd/dvd disc-player (external in range from driver seat)
    GPS
    Wireless network card
Reciever for wireless mouse and keyboard
    tv-tuner
    docking station
external in dash - touchscreen (around 7")
connection to steering whell-buttons, volume, track change
automatic mute function when cell phone is used
Car: bmw 320 (e46) with Ibus (probably?)

Maybe all of this can be handled without having to much trouble taking the pc out from the car from time to time.

Well a laptop only has so many inputs. outside of possible PCMCIA card and a serial thing or two, most of your stuff will have to be USB. So you could get a hub to leave in the car and plug it all in there. Without a dock, you'll still need to remove your vga cable, (possibly mouse/kb if not usb) and power.

Ok I´m not sure how I will solve the steering-wheel control integration since some say that my car, a 2002year bmw 320 (e46) does have a new more difficult bus type (not IBUS...)

anyone who knows an adapter? and can this also be connected to the docking station?
