It's that whole IBM 75GXP fiasco that caused the warranty periods to go down the tubes..

The really ironic thing in my case is that back in 97/98 we had WD drives going bad left and right at my job and I was replacing the drives literally on a daily basis.. and it left a really bad taste in my mouth for years.

.. so I figured enough time had passed and I'd give WD another shot.. decided to go with these drives for the NAS.. and what do I get in return..??!!

I run two WD drives and two Maxtor drives, all have been running great for years. The only drives I've had fail on me were a fujitsu, which I was out of warranty, and a Samsung 2.5" hd a week or so after I bought it.

On the Samsung laptop drive: I bought the drive (80 gig for 80 bucks) off of ebay, recieved it and it went dead after about a week. I contacted Samsung and got an rma number after one day, shipped the drive to them (I paid) and they shipped me a new one back (they paid, 2 day shipping). The entire transaction took about a week and a half. My point is, Samsung had great customer service, if you're building a car computer get a laptop hard drive and make sure it's a Samsung!

Oh, and the new Samsung hd has been running great for a couple of months now.

    Update:

I sent an email to as many WD addresses as I could find today, asking them to cancel the RMA, as well as detailing the history I presented here. I also asked that the email be forwarded to the president/CEO of Western Digital.

Although I suspect that the email will never make it to the head of the company, I am interested to see if they will address the issue, or even dignify me with a reply.

Based on their past performance, I would be surprised to hear from them.

I guess bad drives have their perks. Where else do you find harddrive magnets and cool iridescent coasters?

I have 5 Western Digital drives, including 2 raptors, running in my PC right now and I haven't had a problem with any, but I don't think I'll be buying anymore. I actually have had very few dead Western Digital drives at the places I've worked for but this is probably just freak chance.

Customer service is everything with these things because all drives eventually die. I think I'll go with Seagate for my next brand of drives, they also offer a 5 year warranty.

i have only bought seagate drives for the last 3-4 years, after haveing some bad experiences with other drives. I have never had to call customer service so i dont know if they are good/bad/indifferent but the fact i have not had to call them is what keeps me happy.
