Running XP read-only is pretty easy and works well. Just see the instructions on installing EWF up above.

That doesn't run it completely read only, it still does a few writes

there are no writes when you run EWF. you can check it by using VMWare or Virtual PC and monitoring the HDD device. the only writes that occur are those you do yourself.

ummm...I wrote up that EWF doc bro. I've been using it for almost a year. That and a lot of XPe developers in the world use it. There are no writes to the physical disk when you use EWF in RAM-REG mode. That's the whole point. If there are writes in your setup then something is not configured properly, either the bootstat.dat file someone mentioned earlier hasn't been removed or maybe you're not using RAM-REG mode in which case config info and overlays are stored in a hidden partition of the drive you're protecting.

I didn't follow your doc, I was using xpembedded and worked for a company that had plenty of resources with MS and my boss let me open a case with them since it was the end of the year and our support incidents would expire and we had plenty used so he let me use one. They said that completely running read only isn't possible that it will always need to write something.

when was this? most likely it wasn't running in RAM-REG mode then which was added in XPe SP2. when I first used EWF on XP Pro I had to use PerfMon to monitor my VM's IDE channels to confirm that there were no writes being made. If you use one of the other EWF configs then it will definitely write something on the disk.

It was pre sp2 but the gut from microsoft said it would not be fixed as it was a by design feature. He was disapointed too that it worked properly in nt4 and w2k embedded.
