    Usb??

I am setting up my carPC and I just came across something with my USB port. I noticed if I have my jump drive plugged into the PC and shutdown/restart the comp, the computer doesnt recognize the drive when it starts up again, I have to take the jump drive out and pluh it back in, in order for it to read it. But when I hibernate the system, this does not happen. IS there anyway to fix this problem? I have not tried plugging any other USB devices in it yet....

Your problem is most likely bios related. I'd look through the bios and see if there are any settings that are usb related you can change. If you're on a linux box and aren't too experienced w/ it, I'd say don't change the bios unless you're in the mood for an OS reinstall. My instinct is that there are bios settings to search for a USB boot device. If you're on windows, does it pick up the usb device at all? i.e. do you have an 'unknown device' in the device manager? I have a 1 gig flash drive that I had to format reformat to fat16 to do everything I wanted it to do (boot bartPE on some work machines)... so let me know if any of my questions sparked a fix... Bottom line is that windows sucks with USB devices.

I did a quick search for you and an mp3car result came up... not a flash drive, but a usb drive none the less:

    Good Luck.

I'm 99% sure it's a bios thing (especially if you don't have 'unknown devices'). I used to only use amd supported boards, and have been using all intel (manufactured) boards for about 2 years. On my last 775 board, the only way to install windows XP was to install a bios created by some guy in his basement... "preacher phil" i think was the name... most poorly designed mobo I've ever had.

If you're feeling frisky, try a bios upgrade. There are people on this in these forums who've tried bios upgrades with your board that have had to send back the board:
Who else has had problems with Via M10k Bios v1.16?
In that post, the video card and usb were using the same IRQ. Not the problem you're having, but it was a M10k that required a flash.

Before you do a bios upgrade, make sure it's not windows. Get the latest drivers for that usb drive. Also, have it plugged in and recognized and do a microsoft update (click custom) and make sure you have all of your hardware updates. Best of luck!

also, if it always does that 'unknown device' gig... it's definately a windows problem; no bios upgrade needed.

Go into your CMOS and disable legacy drivers and anything having to do with a USB keyboard. I had a similar problem and somebody on this board gave me that advice. It solved the problem.

it'd be best to have an internet connection. That way microsoft update's aspx takes control of everything. Is it a lexar? go to their website and download the latest driver.

Lastly, definately take kbreeden's advice. I'm still sort of leaning towards a cmos/bios thing. Tinkering with BIOS settings can be daunting...
    10 one bios change
    20 save
    30 see if it worked
    40 reboot
    50 goto 10
    Can take an hour +
