    Slimline IDE extension

I have been completely unable to find the cable I need, and this may be due to it not existing. I have a laptop with a 50pin connection for the internal IDE Slimline CD/DVD and I would like to find a cable to place the drive outside of the laptop. (about 18")

This would allow me to install the Slimline drive in my dash while still connecting it to the internal bay on the laptop. I know it can be converted to IDE/USB but it's an older laptop with only 1 USB 1.1 connection. The USB cannot handle the power and I need to power it from the laptop so the internal connection is the best route.

    Drive: Toshiba DVD-ROM model SD-C2302
    Laptop: IBM T20

I have performed countless searches in the forum, and have yet to find the answer to this question. Any help which may be provided is greatly appreciated.

I know there are adapters to take a slimline CDROM from a laptop and use it on a standard IDE channel.
I don't know about using a standard IDE device on a specific laptop, though.
Good luck. Here's a free bump for ya.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

I haven't seen what you're after. I'd recommend getting a usb 2.0 PCMCIA card and an external enclosure, will prob come in useful for other USB devies too. U can usually power the drive from a PS/2 port, or power a USB hub from a PS/2 and connect the drive to the hub using 2 cables (1 just for extra power).

Or try and make the cable using a converter on the drive an IDE cable and then make something for the other end. A bank of headers from an old motherboard might fit, or chop up another converter to do it.

Thanks for the suggestions RichEO. I know I could get a PC card USB but the PS2 power is an interesting idea i will need to investigate.

I just hate to buy extra stuff when I have a perfectly good DVD drive with it's own connection, but just can't get it 12 inches closer to the dash without the whole laptop coming with it.

It looks alot like a VHDCI connector but it isn't angled on the corners.
