the ignition switch is basically your key... when you turn on your car.. it switches on 12v to accessories etc...

look in the fuse panel for something like accessories...

do you have an aftermarket headunit? The cars wiring harness already has a ign setup to turn your radio on when your car goes to ACC. If you have a multimeter just unplug the stereo wiring harness and turn the car on and start checking for 12volts. Once you find one turn your car off to make sure its an ACC line.

the stock wiring harness does not have a wire for ACC/ignition.. the stock radio gets the info via the Can/Bus

aftermarket radios also need this wire ran form the fuse box

    1) Start your car.
    2) Locate your key chain.
    3) Grab the loose end of the key chain.
    4) Follow key chain to the other end.
    5) You have found your ignition switch.

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

You need a multimeter. Its just a wire that has 12v only when the car is on. Should be one behind the radio (unless the radio is one of the cooky ones that stay on after you turn off the key). Otherwise start checking wires under the steering column, i.e. the ignition harness.

You DO have a multimeter right?

Does the car has a cig lighter (or aux power output)? If it does, does it has power all the time or only when the key is switch on? If it only has power when you switch the key on, that is the wire you want to use.

the VW radio stays on until you take the key out of the ignition.. the factory harness does NOT include a wire for the ACC/Ignition...

Also the cigarette lighter always has power in all american VW's ...

now once again.. open up the fusebox and look for the ACC/ignition fuse.. this is from where you will have to tap power ... OR you can open up your steering column and tap into the wires running from the actual ignition...

Dude, this is basic electronics, 101. If you have trouble with this, then instaling something in your car is either not for you, or only for you after you learn a little. We can tell you where it is, and how to find it, but this is basic stuff.

Now, go to your users manual, and locate the section that talks about the Fuse Panel or Fuse Box. Then, read that section, and look for a fuse that has a device that is on when the car is running, but no matter what, turns off with the car. There are lots of them, like the winshield wipers, the radio, the turn signals, that kind of thing. Then, with a multimeter (Or test light, what ever you have), test the fuse by touching the probes, one to ground, and the other to that little bit of exposed metal on the back of the fuse. With the key turned you will have 12 volts. When the key is removed, you should not have 12 volts, THAT IS A SWITCHED IGNITION POWER SOURCE. If when you remove the key, there is still 12 volts, then it IS NOT SWITCHED IGNITION POWER Source. You then need to attach a wire to that fuse (with something called a "FUSE TAP". for it) THAT IS A SWITCHED IGNITION POWER SOURCE, and then run the wire to your PS.

There are other ways, but that is probably the easiest for a novice like you.
