    AMD Geode NX 1750

Hey, i saw a great deal for the AMD Geode NX 1750, which runs at 14 watts and is 1.4GHz with a biostar mobo for 85

I havent heard much about the Geode CPU's. Does any one have any experiance with the Geode, since few-non is posted about them. They seem perfect for a car PC: little heat (can operate fanless) and little power.

I guess my biggest question is if the 1.4GHz is enough to run a car PC with DVD, XP, GPS, ....

I saw you had your other setups for sale, so what board did you get and what case are you putting it in?

    YEP...
The heatsink was hanging on one clip, so make sure that it's installed correctly before starting it up.
I'd like to take this opportunity to also say that the core of the cpu was covered with about ten times as much thermal interface material than what was needed. It covered almost the entire cpu. What a mess!
I cleaned it all up and put on some good stuff...
I'll probably end up putting on another heatsink anyway. This fan is a little louder than I like. I think it's a 50mm fan and it spins at ~5K rpm...it whines a little like a harddrive...I'll know more once I get it in a case...

One thing is, unless it says otherwise in the item description or something, it's probably safe to assume that the mobo won't support standby. I've bought a couple of boards as "combos" with uncommon processors (such as the geode) and they didn't support standby. Micro-ATX boards you might want to avoid
Haven't had that particular board, though, but it's just something to look out for, if you care about standby.

The PC CHIPS motherboard combo that I bought that came with a geode processor turned out to be a complete waste anyway. Just because the processor is low-power doesn't mean the mobo will be. Comparing between that board and a similar board with an athlon XP-M, the power consumption wasn't even that much lower, and the overall consumption was still several times higher than that of the CPU itself - I don't remember the specifics, but I think it was around 55-60W. It's not that surprising, because real low-power boards like the EPIA series are designed from the ground up to be efficient, whereas these combo boards are nothing but regular mobos with some minor tweaks so they work with the geode (or other) processors which didn't exist when they were originally designed - and these mobos weren't exactly high-end in the first place.

Anyway, just some things to think about.
But don't take it from me! here's a quote from a real, live newbie:

i have it, i got a combo deal from geeks.com about 3 months ago, works great, i ran it from la to lasvegas for the all star game and with music, gps, and a movie and it never messed up, and from hibernation to it being ready takes like 7-10 seconds, and i have a full install windows xp, with nothing optimized for speed or anything
