Question Car MP3 CD Radio plus hard drive

We're back with some more design questions. Assume you have a good, in-dash car CD player that can also play MP3 files. Also assume you now have a 10 gig hard drive capability. How would you use this combination and what kinds of functions must be included...displays, controls, buttons, ID3 tags or whatever? As before all comments will be factored into actual design team processes.

    Thumbs up

Very basic comments - even if we mimicked the aforementioned toy which we don't want to do, not one of you has answered the question in entirety. So how would you want this thing to work and what features are important - displays, buttons, playlists, ID3???? Get your friends to respond as well since we REALLY use your input in the design process. You users are VIP!!!

tell ya what, if you give us a little more info on what it already supports, etc... we'll post the features we'd like you to add.

I'd like a 6.8" or 7" VGA LCD that fits in a DIN space and pops out, but has character LCD or VFD info when it is in.

Meatballman: A VGA LCD would be inappropriate for a non computer-based system; it would be a waste using such a display for ID3 information display. A small monochrome display such as a text or graphical LCD or VFD would do fine for their application.

mp3designer: Why do you call the upcoming NEO player a "toy" not worth mimicing? From what you have revealed, your unit will in fact be very similar to theirs -- CD and hard disk storage, DIN-mounted, with a small display.

In fact, their unit seems to be smaller (single DIN) and from a company that has already produced several products. Where is your presence? Does your company have a website with pictures and preliminary features/product information people can look at? It seems to me that having some information available would help people better respond to your questions.

It seems to me that you are using this board as a "cheap" (free?) way of conducting market research. Most people who frequent this site are do-it-yourself types who would rather build their own computer-based system than buy a prebuilt system that offers less features than something they could make for less themselves.

Maybe the reason you aren't getting the responses you want is because this board represents the wrong audience.

These are some things you should think about.

    Cool

FYI- Our market research folks have already done exhaustive MP3 and satellite radio research that is available if I want it. I am not interested in market research but in designing usable products that incorporate how real MP3 users want to use in-car players. 2) I know you guys build MP3 into your dashboards. What better place to come so that I can ask "expert" users. 3) Our company has been designing and building high end audio products for decades for a number of OEM and automotive manufacturers. Many of the high end/quality names you recognize were built by us, but do to non-disclosure clauses I can't name them. Note that these products of ours are OEM/automotive grade as opposed to the lesser aftermarket standars. 4) As for the "toy" comment, the Rio products are very good but incorporate a computer-based mental model that may not be optimal for in car use. 5) Our offering is not yet designed, but to do it correctly, we need you the users to weigh in with your views on functionality, usefullness and so on. So keep the good comments coming, with or without the sarcasm!!!

Of course you like the comments with or without the sarcasm its free info for you company hell any company would take free information about stuff in their field. I just don't know why you bug us! Yes we build our own and might know the best way to use it and keep it simple but I don't think some of us want to give our hard work out just so some company can come along and make money from it.
