The socket 478 pentium M will work with the MB896. Ebay is best way to go for a cheap Penitum M, i have got several for under $30. You can also look into the new Aopen pentium M minipc if you dont mind the lack of pci and serial ports.
Hello All,
I am in the midst of designing a system and would like to move forward with the everything, but I keep bouncing between Mobo's. I was at first aiming for the via sp13000 or M2-12000, but as I learn more, I think I should go Pentium M or Celeron M (MB896).
I called Goce at MP3car. He was great to talk to and was able to answer all my questions I had especially since I am not a computer guy. However after poking around more I now have more questions. I am leaning toward Pentium M or Celeron M over the Via for the added speed. I would rather pay a little bit more now, then have to upgrade later if I find that as I get more involved in tweaking a carputer I can have a system to grow into rather then out of. I did a search on ebay for socket 479 CPU's and there are very few and they are quite expensive. I did a search here and found a thread that said a socket 478 CPU will work with a 479 board. Is this true? Is there a downside to doing this? I figured if it workred, I could get a lower cost CPU at first and maybe buy a faster one later on when the price lowers. Also, if I buy a 478 it makes the whole package between the Via and Pentium M about 100 bucks more total which seems justifiable.
Also, I plan to mount the unit under the passenger seat and only have the board, powersupply and Hard drive in the box. My DVD will be located externaly. Can anyone reccomend a case to use? Goce said the ampie would work, but I would have to use an M2-ATX supply rather then opus since it would not fit in that case and space would be tight. Any small case I can use the opus in and still fit under a seat? I found low DB fans for the Pentium M, but I am unsure if it will fit in the case as well. Any fan Suggestion.
I am still open to the idea of the Via SP13000 if people seem happy with it. I will mainly do mp3's, DVD for the kids, Nav and possibly OBD2. I doubt I would ever do NAV and DVD at the same time, but who knows as my needs may change.
Any help will be greatly appreciated,
Marc Webster

Honestly I would go with the Pentium M, I have the MB896 and love it, I was able to pick a Pentium M 1.8 2M cache chip for $89. Which so far has been plenty fast for me. My chip is a socket 478 chip though.
but if your that tight on money you can pick up a pentium M 1.3 for $40 and then upgrade later. Just make sure you get a chip with at least 1M cache or it'll be slow.
I can't say much for the case because I didnt actually try to fit all mine into one, I built my own case. But the pentium M cpu fan I got was very low profile so it looks as if it would fit just fine.

Is your computer in your passenger area or in a trunk? I am leaning toward under the seat to ease the install, but I hear that the fan noise can be anoying. However I see fans that say they are very quiet, so I am unsure if it would be an issue. By the way what are your case dimensions? I have access to a CNC machine here at work and can make my own as well from hogged out billet with a sheetmetal bottom.
Best regards,

Mine is in the trunk, only because I dont have enough room under my seats and I dont like the thought of people putting their muddy feet on my carputer. But mine is almost silent even with the trunk open you can't hear it running.
I will get you case dimensions when I get home, but mine is pretty much exactly as wide as a ITX board and about 1 and 1/2 times the length which fits my opus and HD perfectly

Thanks for the update, I look forward to the case size dimensions. I am a bit worried about peoples feet as well, but if I can get the case small enough, I may be able to avoid the feet issue. Also with under the seat, I can route dirrectly into the center console very easily. Also, I have an AC vent for cooling under my seats which may help on hot days. I had planned on hiding it in the trunk on top of the spare tire like the G35 case on mp3car. The only downside to this is that I would have to run a myriad of wires to the center console which may be difficult. I plan to do the install myself so I have no idea how to go from the back to the front. I also have a Mazda 6 waggon, so I just cant hide it in a trunk either since I fold down seats for storage. If in the end the spare tire mount is the best, I will look into asking people who have installed wiring in M6 wagons for guidance. I have a storage area on the side of the trunk area where the jack is and I could make an odd size case to possibly fit in there and run the wiring down the side of the car.

That sentence right there tells me which direction you should go. Unless you KNOW exactly what you want to do with your setup you should stay away from any itx mobo. I thought i'd just do mp3, occassional dvd, and gps but my wants grew and far outgrew the capabilities of any itx mobo. Go pentium M and at least have power to spare.Originally Posted by thrmaln
Sorry for the delay there, i'm still working on getting some pics on how I laid the case out but this is the case I bought, I wanted to have room to grow.
12" x 7" x 4" (304.8mm x 177.9mm x 101.6mm)

this case is a bit tall, it's really only suited for a trunk install. but with laptop drive and a M2 ATX a much much smaller case could be used.

For your needs, the SP13000 should have adequate power, and a lower price. You might grow out of it like you said, but as you now know the Pentium M's can be very costly. I'm using a Pentium M 760, the proc alone was significantly more that the whole SP.
If you are planning on sending the DVD playback to a separate TV panel for the kids, the MB896 won’t work for you, since it has no TV out. Early on the, MB896F was supposed to have TV out but the iBase engineers never got it working for some reason.
From conversations I’ve had with iBase, the MB896 has a history of being picky with some memory. However I’ve tested 3 different sticks, with no problems. Just a heads up.
An advantage for the MB896 would be that if you ever want more power, you can upgrade the proc.
An advantage for the SP: VIA’s latest BIOS for the SP13000 added widescreen support and, apparently, 800x480 is now doable. I may add a SP to my collection for this very reason.
A lot of people on the board are running socket 478 Pentium M's on a 479 board, i myself have used 4 different socket 479 boards with 478 chips.
